"Movement is what we are, not something we do"
Emilie Conrad, visionary and founder of Continuum Movement®
Embodiment Performances look to the biology of the body to find that all life is movement, from the minutia of cells to
the macro of bone, and our fluid body system is an innate choreographer. These artists explore transformational
movement experiences, where the body is a house of mystery, which can be accessed when we are present to the
originality of our own experience, viewing the body as an extension of a planetary process.

Somatic Artists explore sensory-motor refinement of their internal physical landscape, expressed in articulation, gesture,
and inner/outer awareness.  Can you imagine maintaining deep physical self-awareness while being attuned to your
environment, plus allowing the creative flux of the unexpected-unknown to present itself spontaneously? The creative
challenge for the Artists includes skill, aesthetics, in-the-moment presence, connection to other performers, audience
members, and the world at large!  The audience plays a participatory role with this visceral performance approach.

These Artists have rare body awareness, with roots in Continuum Movement and other somatic practices, each with
diverse expressions in the living experience of the body and revolutionary possibilities of Art. Neuroplasticity in
performance is explored in the spirit of fostering a more embodied, creative and compassionate world.

Lewis Segal wrote about SOMAfest Artists in the Los Angeles Times :
“Real body awareness… These performers are a breed apart…  Brilliant harnessing of the body”...

BioDiversity!  Come celebrate BODY and MOVEMENT as part of a planetary process. New performance works by an
international cast of artists, SOMAfest11 features a landscape of dance, film, voice, and live music, that expresses diverse
ways we can creatively experience our interconnected relationship to BODY - EARTH/PLACE - and GLOBAL COMMUNITY.

Inspired by relationship to the biosphere we all live in, these artists inhabit the body from the inside out, attuning to the cues
and signals from within one’s personal ecosystem. There’s a flow of intelligence from the natural world through our senses
and tissues. Instead of living “on the surface,” we can know ourselves as part of nature’s body. Infused with somatic
embodiment practices, the work is steeped in sensory-motor sophistication and full-body dynamism expressed in liquidity,
micro-gesture, and profound connection to other performers, audience members, and the world at large! The audience plays
a participatory role with this visceral performance approach

SOMAfest11 Artists include Teri Carter (LA), Caryn Heilman (NYC), Georgiane Cowan (LA), Camille Maurine (LA), John
William Johnson (Portland, OR), Rebecca Bryant (Long Beach), Prairie House Dance (Canada),  and others who present
kinesthetically charged improvisational and contemporary work infused with sensuality, aliveness and innovation.
